The monastery was desecrated and destroyed by the invading forces after the Gurkha army invaded in 1888, and over time the shrine began to represent the Hindu symbols of the majority Nepali community. The legend that there are three Shiva-lingas representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar (Lord Shiva) appeared on the site in 1782. The monastery itself was looted and destroyed in 1815 by the Gorkha invasion after which it was shifted to Bhutia Buti about a mile away and was called Bhutia Buti Bihar.
